How Many Beekeepers

In the UK there are approximately 44,000 beekeepers looking after around 240,000 hives.
They produce 6000 tones of honey per year.
Each hive is worth about £400 to the agricultural economy.
We produce only 20% of the honey we consume - the rest is imported.

Join BIBBA the Bee Improvement and Bee Breeding Association

Get involved in bee breeding. Like all other forms of life bees can be improved by selective breeding. BIBBA encourages beekeepers to work together in breeding groups. Much has been achieved but more could be done by beekeepers working together. Subs are £20 per annum and the Bee Improvement magazine is included in the subscription fee. NBU South East Region 2012 Season
The season began in earnest this year on 26th March. As usual, all of the bee inspectors gathered at the Food and Environment Agency (FERA) at Sand Hutton, York for our Technical Training Seminar. Always a good start to the season, the seminar is 3 days of intensive training for Bee Inspectors, revising our practices etc. ready for the new season ahead. Of course, prior to that, I was busy with lectures to various Associations throughout the SE region.

As always, I will start my report by thanking all the beekeepers who have taken the time to respond to my request for honey crop and price statistics. This year I’ve had an absolutely fabulous response with 470 replies.
