How Many Beekeepers

In the UK there are approximately 44,000 beekeepers looking after around 240,000 hives.
They produce 6000 tones of honey per year.
Each hive is worth about £400 to the agricultural economy.
We produce only 20% of the honey we consume - the rest is imported.

Sting

Bees for Development Trust is pleased to announce Sting as a Patron of the Trust. Musician, actor and activist, Sting is a long time supporter of human rights organisations such as Amnesty International and Live Aid and, along with wife Trudie Styler, founded the Rainforest Foundation in 1989 to protect both the world's rainforests and the indigenous people who live there. We believe his involvement with Bees for Development will help highlight the Trust’s work in promoting sustainable beekeeping methods and livelihoods amongst some of the poorest communities in the world.

Join BIBBA the Bee Improvement and Bee Breeding Association

Get involved in bee breeding. Like all other forms of life bees can be improved by selective breeding. BIBBA encourages beekeepers to work together in breeding groups. Much has been achieved but more could be done by beekeepers working together. Subs are £20 per annum and the Bee Improvement magazine is included in the subscription fee. Defra Beekeeping Study
Defra has commissioned People Science and Policy Ltd and East Malling Research to conduct a study to better understand new beekeepers' husbandry practices and how these are influenced by the advice available to them.
