How Many Beekeepers

In the UK there are approximately 44,000 beekeepers looking after around 240,000 hives.
They produce 6000 tones of honey per year.
Each hive is worth about £400 to the agricultural economy.
We produce only 20% of the honey we consume - the rest is imported.

This letter from David Wood setting out the situation regarding the Competition held at the County Show.

May I confirm that KBKA WILL be at the County Show in 2009 (17th - 19th July) with our usual beekeeping exhibition, observation hives and demonstrations of bee handling. In these difficult times it is vital that we continue to promote education in beekeeping.

If you have any comments regarding what should be included in the exhibition we will be pleased to hear from you.

We will ask for volunteers to help with stewarding nearer the time of the show.

John Hendrie
General Secretary
