How Many Bees in a Hive

A hive can contain up to 70,000 bees in midsummer. There will be 1 queen, 250 drones, 20,000 female foragers, 30,000 female house-bees, 5,000 to 7,000 eggs, 7,000-11,000 larvae being fed, 16,000 to 24,000 larvae developing into adults in sealed cells.

Tea, coffee and biscuits provided. Bring your own packed lunch. Roger Patterson is organising the Local Queen Programme which is designed to encourage beekeepers to produce bees that suit their area. In this event he will cover methods of queen rearing that will suit one person on their own as well as larger groups such as a BKA where possibly the teaching apiary can be used for queen rearing. He will encourage beekeepers to assess their colonies and rear queens from those showing the required characteristics. Plenty of free parking on the adjacent roads. Vera Fletcher Hall is a short walk from Thames Ditton BR station.

Join BIBBA the Bee Improvement and Bee Breeding Association

Get involved in bee breeding. Like all other forms of life bees can be improved by selective breeding. BIBBA encourages beekeepers to work together in breeding groups.
