Hard Life

To collect a pound of honey a bee might have to fly a distance equivalent to twice round the world. This is likely to involve more than 10,000 flower visits on perhaps 500 foraging trips.
A worker honeybee in summer lives only 6 to 8 weeks from the time she hatches as an adult bee. Before that, it takes just 3 weeks for her to develop from an egg.

I am secretary of a Broadstairs Allotment Association. We are planning to keep bees on the site, and would like to send a couple of our members on the Beginners Course. Are there still vacancies?

Dear Jean Mozlley

Back in the early sixties I kept bees (two/three hives) and had them for about 6 years. I enjoyed it very much but owing to business moves I had to give them up. I did think of starting up again but with marriage and children I thought it best to leave my bee keeping days behind me. However lately I have become interested in starting again and living on the edge of Tenterden with quite a lagre garden backing on to a large field and woods I felt that the time is now to take up bee keeping once again. I would begin with one hive with probably a maximum of two.

I am aware that you are running a tasters course on the 21 February and wonder if it would be a suitable starting point as times have changed since I had bees. Perhaps you would let me know as I am free that Sunday afternoon and having worked in Folkestone for several years I know where Rhodes Minnis is.

I look forward to hearing from you

These courses are very useful - apart from the learning, you will also develop contacts with members in your neighborhood.
