Bee News Monthly Update

Welcome
to the October 2002 issue of Bromley News. There was disappointingly little support from members considering the amount of work involved in organising a honey show. I wonder what will happen in the future to local honey shows when members do not support them. Local shows are often the nursery ground for new exhibitors and showers who want to learn their craft, later moving on to becoming winners at County and National level. The show organisers would like to thank those who did make the effort and congratulation to all the winners!

been asked to remind members to pay subs promptly as this helps our

News The queen rearing has come to an end for the season and I still have some queens I don't know what to do with. I'll probably put them in my own hives in the apiary and see what happens on the swarming front next year. As you
know, Dave Harris is still in hospital but appears at last to be making
good progress. He has his hives on a farm at Shooters Hill and was
worried that he couldn't show his face at their Open Day, so Clive
and I went along with the observation hive which we set up in the
farmyard which attracted crowds all day long. At 12.00 midday we gave
a demonstration to about 40 visitors which included an extended session
by Clive when he installed the Varroa Strips. Small chunks of comb
cut from one of the super frames and passed to the onlookers brought
the usual sound of umms and errs to the satisfaction of all concerned.
At the end of the day the Governor at the farm expressed his great
satisfaction at our performance and almost demanded that we re-appear
next year. Needless to say that Dave was also relieved that the farmer
was not let down. Get well soon Dave !! Thursday the 24th of October is the date this year when we make our usual excursion to the Mid Kent Branch at The Bull, Farleigh. John Powel is giving a talk on ‘Bees up Close’, and if the title does not appeal I can assure you that John always finds something to make the evening well worth while. I'll have to miss badminton that evening, but a small price to pay. Have
a lovely time with all that honey and don't get the kitchen too sticky. Peter
